1st Essay due on January 27th
8th Grade Honors Students,
We've been blogging for a couple months now and the first semester of the school year is nearly over. Along with regularly posting to your blog on the books you have been assigned to read, you are required to write 2 essays, one during each semester. Your first essay is due on Thursday, January 27th, which is the last day of first semester.
Essay guidelines:
> Must be at least 500 words
> Must relate the books you've read to what you are learning in history class about that time period. For example, compare/contrast what you've learned about the time period in The Witch of Blackbird Pond to what you have learned in history class.
> The three books you can take from for this essay are Johnny Tremain, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
> Using the format of a 5-paragraph essay would be a good way to go about this task (with each book one of the supporting paragraphs).
> Hint: If you feel like you've forgotten the earlier books you read, you can go to each other's blogs and look under Archives for past posts on those books to remember some of the things that happened in them.
> Essays should be thoughtful and interesting, grammatically correct, spell-checked, etc.
Also, everyone should be done blogging on The Witch of Blackbird Pond (even you, Jacque!), should have taken the AR test by now, and have moved along to posting on The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

Stephanie (and others): You don't HAVE to have information from all three books since you're not required to have finished Tom Sawyer yet.

Alan,
Tom Sawyer fits in with the other books because of the time period. In The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Kit arrives in the Northeast part of the U.S. around 1867. Obviously, parts of that book can be compared to the Salem Witch Trials in American History.
With The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, it's set around 1840-1850 but in a very different part of the country. The book doesn't hit on any one big event in U.S. History, but it does deal with a boy growing up in that time period.
I think, basically, you're reading this book to get an idea of what it was like for a boy to grow up during that time period in that part of the country.
